Born in Troy, Ohio in 1943. Hawaii resident since 1969. EDUCATION Graduated University of Hawaii - 1972, B.F.A. Environmental Design (Architectural Program). Studied at Southern Illinois University, Dept. of Design, under R. Buckminster Fuller, inventor of the geodesic dome. EXPERIENCE Self-employed Hawaii Licensed Architect since 1986. Self-employed Architectural Designer in Hawaii from 1977 to 1986. Consultant for, or employed by, the following architectural firms in Honolulu from 1969 to 1977: N. A. Hallonquist & Associates, Anderson Johnson Reinhardt Architects, Ltd., Whitaker/Crane Architects, The Ralph M. Parson Co., Cannell & Chaffin, John Bowen Designer, Inc., A & E Corporation, Louis Pursel & Associates. RELATED EXPERIENCE Planning, advertising and graphic art; design and production of steel, alloy and plastic products; tool and die design. FOREIGN TRAVEL Tom lived in upcountry Thailand for 2 years while in the U.S. Air Force, then returned for 3 1/2 years as a civilian designer and consultant. He speaks, reads and writes Thai. Tom has also travelled to Laos, The Philippines, and Japan. FAMILY Tom has been married to his wife Diane for over 20 years. They have two children and a cat. Diane is a graduate of Punahou School and UC Berkeley and assists Tom in his business. Tom's first job in an architect's office was with his future father-in-law, Lou Pursel, a Honolulu architect noted for designing the Manoa Library, La Pietra residences and the Musicians' Union Building. |
